“You don’t throw a whole life away just because it’s banged up a little.”
Since we started YoungDale Farms in 2003 we had a goal. To help diminish the unwanted horse population as much as we were able. To that end we began taking on unwanted horses, rehabilitating them, and giving them a second chance at life through our lesson program.
One of our first rescues was Tequilla – a young Paso Fino mare that had foundered due to metabolic issues that the owners weren’t prepared to help resolve. They did not want to deal with her, and so she came to us. After fixing her feet up and going on a low glycemic diet, she became one of our best lesson and trail ponies.
Then there was Reflexion, a.k.a Give Me A Call – owned and loved by a wonderful young lady, he injured himself just before she was set to go off to college. As he needed a lot more time and rehabilitation than she would be able to manage while in school, she and her family came to the decision to call Christina. A year and a half of rehab work later Reflexion became Christina’s favourite trail mount, and everyone’s favourite lesson horse.
Not all hoses on the farm came to us out of bad circumstances. Sometimes owners just cannot keep their horse, or cannot provide the time they need, and it is no one’s fault. What’s important is that the owners see when they cannot do enough and ask for help.
These days, Christina has taken on a number of young horses, and has started conditioning them as trail mounts. One such horse is Luna – a 7 year old Arab mare who was in foal. Christina came across her as she was going for meat and saw potential for a good solid distance horse. A year later Luna has had her foal and is now back in training for the upcoming 2016 season.
We at YoungDale are extremely proud of all our horses and will always continue to provide a loving home for them until their final days – or until some lucky rider falls in love and wants to have one of our horses for their very own.
If you would like to sponsor a rescued horse, don’t hesitate to contact us. As we are not an official rescue we receive no extra funding for the hungry mouths we take on. Sponsoring a horse can help save more horses in the long run. For more information on this please see our sponsorship page.
